Civic Recreation Complex
The Civic Recreation Complex is Oshawa’s most diverse and premier sporting destination. It has been recognized as Durham Region’s most active recreation facility, hosting over 9 million visitors in the past year. Moreover, it offers a wide variety of amenities for its guests to enjoy including an indoor ice rink with public skating sessions, 3 outdoor soccer fields, 2 ball diamonds and 6 tennis courts. With so many opportunities for people of all ages to have fun at the complex, it is no wonder that so many people are visiting.
The Civic Recreation Complex (CRC) was opened on January 28, 1993, as part of the city’s official plan to expand recreation and entertainment opportunities. CRC is a landmark in Oshawa because it was the first recreational center of its kind in Canada and it has since become a model for other cities that want to build civic centers. The 45-acre (18 ha) site includes four multi-purpose sports fields and an eight-court indoor tennis facility, each field capable of hosting international soccer, rugby or football games.
This facility features 5 outdoor fields (2 with artificial turf), a full-size indoor fieldhouse, indoor and outdoor tracks, a swimming pool, a fitness centre, indoor tennis and squash courts and an outdoor playground. A variety of recreation programs and camps are offered seasonally, including an adult soccer league. There is an operating concession in the summer months inside the outdoor stadium. The facility has an ATM on the premises.
This recreational hub even has some history behind it – in 1991 The Civic Recreation Complex hosted the World Youth Soccer Championships which was held without any problems or concerns. This event attracted lots of attention from around the world because it was the first time that an international sporting event of this caliber had been held in Canada.
The complex was also recognized in 2015 for its excellence with a Facility Achievement Award from the Ontario Recreation Facilities Association.
